All five feet of Sabrina Carpenter arrived at the VMAs 2024, and she came armed with the top album in the country, a juicy love triangle to play with, and an…Old Hollywood-inspired long bob? I guess both Carpenter’s album and her hair are Short n’ Sweet! (Sorry.)

The “Please Please Please” singer’s hyperfeminine aesthetic has drawn comparisons to Marilyn Monroe and Madonna since “Espresso” went viral, but now that the 25-year-old is rocking this Old Hollywood–inspired haircut—which appears to be several inches shorter than the lengthy blonde do for which she’s known—she’s identical to both.

Apparently that was intentional: According to Vogue, Carpenter and her stylist Jared Ellner reached out to Tab Vintage “with an incredible mood board" for the look, eventually opting for a silver beaded Bob Mackie dress from 1991 that was originally designed for Madonna to wear to perform at the Academy Awards. But that’s not all—the design was also inspired by Marilyn Monroe in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.

Clearly, Carpenter and her glam squad aced the assignment.

Sabrina Carpenter’s VMAs 2024 nominations include: artist of the year, song of the year (“Espresso”), best pop, best direction (“Please Please Please,” directed by Bardia Zeinali), best editing (“Espresso,” edited by Jai Shukla), and best art direction (“Please Please Please,” art direction by Nicholas des Jardins). She’s working late, ’cuz she’s a singer…

Last year Sabrina Carpenter performed a mashup of “Nonsense” and “Feather,” her two biggest songs at the time. Now she’s got multiple major hits, including “Please, Please, Please,” the possibly gossipy “Taste,” and the song of the summer, “Espresso.”

Hopefully she’ll get to meet her favorite celebs tonight. “Oh God—I had a really dangerous Zac Efron phase, when he was in Hairspray,” she recently told W. “I was 12 years old, and I was on a beach for the Fourth of July. He would never remember this, but I saw him and said, ‘I’m a big fan of your work!’ He gave me a hug. And I remember thinking, Oh my God—he wasn’t wearing a shirt and he gave me a hug! I was like, This is amazing. I’m never washing my body!”
