Sadie Sink teases Max's fate in “Stranger Things” final season: 'They love having me run'
The actress is currently filming the fifth and final season in Atlanta.
Put on some Kate Bush: Sadie Sink dropped some tantalizing clues about her character Max's fate in the fifth and final season of Stranger Things.
In the season 4 finale, the grief-stricken Max falls into a coma after her showdown with Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) — who briefly succeeds in killing her before Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) restarts her heart — in the Upside Down. It's unclear when or whether (or if!) she will wake up. But Sink has been filming the final season with her costars in Atlanta.

Is that proof that Max makes it out of the coma? "They love having me run,” Sink said cryptically in a new Variety cover story when asked about her fate. Running in Hawkins? The Upside Down? Up that hill? Sink's not biting: “That’s all I’ll say."
Series creators and brothers Matt and Ross Duffer also remained tight-lipped and vague, but Matt did offer this to the outlet: "She’s going to play a part in the season."
“But we don’t want to reveal how that’s possible,” added Ross.
“Right," Matt added, "because she’s in a coma."

While praising Sink's acting chops, though, Matt did divulge something promising: "I think she’s grown just more confident as an actor and in her choices. We did film a scene the other day with her that was just absolutely heartbreaking. I don’t know how she hits those notes.”
The final season will follow the Hawkins heroes as they square off against Vecna, who achieved opening up the four gates that bridged the separation between the Upside Down and the sleepy small town in the season 4 finale. While seriously injured by Nancy (Natalia Dyer) and Co., the finale made it clear that the villain is still very much alive and at large.
Filming, which was impacted by the dual writers' and actors' strikes, reached a halfway point last month. A premiere date hasn't been announced yet, but it's expected to return sometime in 2025. Sink, who joined during season 2 at just 14, called growing up on set the "best training in the world,” but also referred to it as "a machine."
Sink, who stared in 2022's The Whale, also told Variety she'll be steering clear of Hollywood machines once her time in Hawkins is up. “I don’t want to play a superhero or a princess,” she said. “I just want to make sure everything that I’m doing is different than the last. I’m still young, and I’m still learning.”
