Sally Rooney's Normal People becomes steamy TV romance in first teaser
Time to meet Hulu’s Normal People.
The streamer has debuted the first teaser for its upcoming adaptation of the Sally Rooney novel, ahead of their press day during Friday’s Television Critics Association tour.
Set to launch this spring, Normal People follows the turbulent romance of Marianne and Connell, from their high-school days in small-town Ireland to college life in bustling Dublin. Over the years, their dynamics ebbs and flows, and they move in and out of each other’s lives; still, their relationship deepens and they grow more into themselves. Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal star.
The novel by literary sensation Rooney was one of 2019’s biggest books in the U.S., emerging as an instant New York Times best-seller and being named one of the 10 best books of the year by critics from The New York Times, Slate, Elle, and more. EW named it the no. 1 book of 2019.
The teaser hints at the romantic sweep of the adaptation, as rendered by Oscar-nominated director Lenny Abrahamson (Room), who helms the first six installments. Rooney is also aboard as a cowriter. She told EW last year as production on the series was gearing up, “I’m still fond of these characters, and that’s a good thing, because I’m having to spend a lot of time with them again!”
A 12-episode limited series of half-hour episodes, Normal People premieres this spring. Watch the teaser above.
