Sam Smith has been having a lot of fun with their fashion this year — as evidenced by their Grammys ringmaster look last weekend:
Their SNL dress (which contained one Kim Petras):
And all of their looks in the "I'm Not Here To Make Friends" music video:
But, I think it will be fairly uncontroversial to say that their BRIT Awards red carpet look is one of their most daring looks so far:
The look appears to be by Harri, a brand that has previously gone viral for its inflatable pants. Similar looks have been achieved by the brand using a seven-millimeter-wide inflation valve that pumps air through the outfit. Indeed, you can even buy a similar set of pants for a cool $4,825.
Designer Harikrishnan said of the silhouette in 2020, "I got the idea when I was playing with my dog and I started thinking about how exaggerated objects must look from such a low angle." I am personally also reminded of David Bowie's 1973 Kansai Yamamoto jumpsuit for the Aladdin Sane tour.
Sam's stylist is Ben Reardon, and the singer previously said in an Instagram post dedicated to him, "your talent and your vision is unprecedented in my life. You have taught me so much and re-introduced me to art and creativity in a way that I never thought was possible. Thank you for helping me be brave and have fun at the same time."
Let's take a moment to appreciate the sculptural detailing on the shoulders and chest:
Sam also wore an anchor earring, likely as a reference to their fans, who they dubbed their "little sailors."
And, of course, they completed the look with giant heels:
If you're wondering, "How can one possibly walk in this?" I would humbly direct you to this video:
