Following recent abortion bills, Samantha Bee gives male politicians a lesson in sex ed

Following the introduction and passage of abortion laws in multiple states, Samantha Bee, who is currently the only female host in late-night TV, took it upon herself to teach sex ed to male politicians. Two particularly restrictive bills that caught Bee’s attention are in Ohio and Georgia, which make abortion illegal after a heartbeat is detected, which can happen as early as six weeks into a pregnancy.

“It’s still hard to know if you’re pregnant at six weeks,” Bee said. “You might have no symptoms or if you do, they’re symptoms like fatigue, or bloating and gas.” Then she joked, “On the other hand, it does explain P.F. Chang’s new motto: ‘Maybe it’s not us. Maybe you’re pregnant.’”

Next Bee took aim at the Ohio bill, which would ban most private insurance from covering abortion, yet allows it to cover reinserting an ectopic pregnancy in the uterus, a procedure that is not scientifically possible.

“Class is in session, dummies,” Bee said while singling out Ohio State Rep. John Becker, who sponsored the bill and spoke recently about the nonexistent procedure. “You can’t re-implant an ectopic pregnancy you old, tragic Kenneth from 30 Rock. Becker’s ignorance is going to kill people. Ectopic pregnancies are almost never viable. They are very dangerous and they can’t be treated via close-up magic.”

Bee took special exception to language in the Georgia bill which states that women who miscarry could be investigated to see if they had an abortion.

“What the people who wrote this law clearly don’t understand is miscarriage is incredibly common,” Bee said. “About 10 to 20 percent of known pregnancies end in miscarriage. Pregnancy loss can be devastating. Imagine if people were also forced to go through an unnecessary investigation.”

Bee went on to say, “These laws are designed to oppress and control, and ultimately to overturn Roe v. Wade, and if they succeed, they will directly result in death and poverty for women and other vulnerable people.”
