Samantha Bee rips Democrats for not defending Ilhan Omar amid Republican criticism: 'They kind of threw her under the bus'
On Full Frontal With Samantha Bee, Democrats became the target of Bee’s wrath for their response to Republican criticism of Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) over comments she made that some construed as anti-Semitic. Omar gained the ire of those on the right for, among other things, criticizing the influence a pro-Israel lobby has over foreign policy. Rather than come to Omar’s defense, her Democratic colleagues in the House drafted a resolution to condemn anti-Semitism and all other forms of hate.
“Democrats want to be the big-tent, diverse party,” Bee said. “They’re more than willing to pose with Omar on magazine covers, but when she tried to talk about a truly difficult topic, which is her job as an elected official, and her life was in danger, they kind of threw her under the bus.”
Bee also pointed out that Omar is just one of a group of freshman representatives that are not satisfied with the status quo and have brought to the forefront a number of difficult and long-overdue conversations, including that of Israel and Palestine, and she encouraged Democrats to take control of that conversation.
“The Democrats need to have that conversation respectfully,” Bee said, “and not let the Republicans drive the bus.”
Full Frontal With Samantha Bee airs Wednesdays at 10:30 p.m. on TBS.
