Sammy Hagar Praises Steven Tyler for Retiring: “Other Motherf**kers Should Have Did [That] a Long Time Ago”

Sammy Hagar took time out of his concert on Friday night (August 2nd) to honor Aerosmith, who had just announced their retirement from touring only hours earlier. The Red Rocker praised singer Steven Tyler for knowing when to call it a day, while also declaring that “a lot of other motherf**kers should have did a long time ago,” perhaps a not-so-subtle dig at longtime nemesis David Lee Roth.
As reported, Aerosmith abruptly retired from touring on Friday, citing Tyler’s vocal injury. The band had hoped to embark on their farewell tour this September after postponing it last year, but determined “that a full recovery from his vocal injury is not possible.”
Hagar is in the midst of his “Best of All Worlds” tour featuring an all-star backing band of Michael Anthony, Joe Satriani, and Jason Bonham. Toward the end of the set, the singer addressed the crowd, sharing the news of Aerosmith’s retirement.
“We had some crazy news today,” Hagar told the audience. “We got here this afternoon sometime and we’re all sitting around backstage and a friend of ours that works for Aerosmith came and said, ‘Yeah, Aerosmith called retirement today. They quit. They stopped.’ God bless ’em. It’s a horrible thing. It’s a horrible thing. What a great fucking loss.”
He continued, “I gotta tell ya, one of the times in 1973 [actually 1974], [my old band] Montrose was playing Cobo [Arena in Detroit], and we were opening for Aerosmeith, and we didn’t know who they were, and they sold out Cobo, and I’m going, ‘Who the fuck are these guys?’ So, we did our show, we did an encore, and we played [The Beatles’] ‘Helter Skelter’ for our encore. And Aerosmith comes on and they opened with ‘Helter Skelter.’ Steven and I have been friends ever since.”
Hagar added, “Long story short, we love those guys. We all grew up with those guys. You grew up with them, we grew up with them, Mike and I. They’ve been our competitors to Van Halen for fucking 10 years. You know what I’m saying? ‘Fuck those guys.’ No, no, no, but we really do like them. It’s just that we’re mad at them. But anyway, what a shame.”
He concluded, “It’s a sad thing, but honest to God, my hat goes off to one of the greatest rock and roll singers of all time, Mister Steven Tyler, for saying, ‘I can’t sing anymore. I quit.’ Fuck yes. Listen, that’s honorable. That’s fucking honorable. The day I can’t sing anymore, I will fucking do the same thing. And that’s what a lot of other motherf**kers should have did a long time ago.”
Hagar and his band then proceeded to play “Helter Skelter” in honor of Aerosmith.
While he made no mention of David Lee Roth, it’s no secret that Hagar has criticized Diamond Dave’s singing in recent years. In a 2023 interview, Hagar declared, “[Roth] sang so bad last time he was doing shows, it was embarrassing.”
Earlier this year, the Red Rocker seemed to have extended an olive branch to Roth by inviting the latter to join him onstage this summer during the tour. Roth actually accepted the invitation, but when Hagar specified that “he can come out and sing a song on a show or two if he can remember the words,” things turned ugly between the two ex-Van Halen singers once again.
Back to his relationship with Aerosmith, Hagar admitted a few years ago that he was approached to replace Steven Tyler in the band around 2009, when Tyler had stepped away from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame act to become a judge on American Idol and pursue other projects.
Hagar’s “Best of All Worlds” tour continues through August 31st in St. Louis. Pick up tickets here, and see a recap and the setlist from last month’s kickoff show here.
