Sarah Ferguson Pens Emotional Tribute to Princess Diana
Today—July 1, 2024–would've been Princess Diana's 63rd birthday.
To mark the occasion, Sarah Ferguson took to Instagram to write a moving tribute to her late friend and former sister-in-law.
"Happy birthday to my dear friend, Diana," the Duchess of York wrote. "You were a pillar of light and love. And what a legacy you have left behind. I will forever remember our laughter and the kindred, kind spirit I found in you. I am sure you are watching over us always. Rest in peace my friend."
Fergie shared a photo of the two women on the balcony of Buckingham Palace, taken in September 1990 as the royals attended an event commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.
Fergie and Diana had a complicated relationship. The women, who were actually fourth cousins, had knwon each other since childhood. In fact, it was Diana who served as matchmaker for Fergie and Prince Andrew, when she got her invited to an event at Windsor Castle in 1985. When they both separated from their husbands in 1992, they remained close, but had a falling out before Diana's death.
Diana "never understood how brilliant she was really, you know, and together we both didn’t. And I used to hug her but she wouldn’t understand," Fergie shared last year. "We loved each other with all our hearts and she made me laugh more than any other single person I’ve ever met in my life."
