Sarah Michelle Gellar has boarded Showtime’s Dexter prequel series, Original Sin.
Gellar will guest star as Miami Metro Police Department CSI chief Tanya Martin, who oversees a young Dexter Morgan (Patrick Gibson) as he begins an internship.
Set 15 years before the original series in 1991 Miami, Dexter: Original Sin follows Dexter as he becomes a “serial killer in-training” under the guidance of his adoptive father, homicide detective Harry Morgan (Christian Slater).
“Dexter: Original Sin follows Dexter as he transitions from student to avenging serial killer,” reads the official logline. “When his bloodthirsty urges can’t be ignored any longer, Dexter must learn to channel his inner darkness. With the guidance of his father, Harry, he adopts a Code designed to help him find and kill people who deserve to be eliminated from society without getting on law enforcements’ radar. This is a particular challenge for young Dexter as he begins a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.”
Original Dexter showrunner and executive producer Clyde Phillips returns in that role for the prequel series, with Michael Lehmann (Heathers) serving as director and executive producer.
Other members of the cast include Molly Brown as Dexter’s sister Debra Morgan, James Martinez as Angel Batista, Christina Milian as Maria LaGuerta, Alex Shimizu as Vince Masuka, Patrick Dempsey as Aaron Spencer, and Reno Wilson as Bobby Watt.
Best known for her titular role in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Gellar’s more recent small screen credits include CW’s Ringer, Masters of the Universe: Revelation, and the Teen Wolf spinoff Wolf Pack.
