‘Saturday Night Live’ #TBT: Tom Cruise Plays ‘Celebrity Jeopardy’
As as an actor, Tom Cruise can do it all — ride in high-speed motorcycle chases, hang from airplanes, leap off of crumbling buildings. But he’s a terrible Celebrity Jeopardy contestant.
Cruise, who stars in The Mummy this weekend, has never hosted Saturday Night Live. Yes, never. Perhaps he’s not willing to make fun of himself, or he just thinks himself above it. In any case, since he’s never appeared on the show, it’s fallen to others to play him in sketches.
In this clip, host Ben Stiller has the honor of playing the amped-up action hero in the recurring Celebrity Jeopardy sketch. When the “Double Jeopardy” round starts, exasperated host Alex Trebek (Will Ferrell) points out that Cruise has $-12,000 due to incorrectly answering the same clues more than once.
Things don’t go any better for a jittery Cruise in round 2, even though the categories are giveaways like “Presidents Who Are on the One Dollar Bills,” “Foods That End in ‘Amburger,’” and “The Number Ten.”
“When I stop talking, just say ‘ten,’” Trebek says, before reading the clue, “This is how many fingers you have.”
Let’s just say Cruise does not say “ten.”
SNL returns for its 43rd season this fall.
