In the trailer, various talking food items start a revolution, becoming the dominant species on Earth. After forming Foodtopia, the characters are practically indestructible, until a flood wipes out their utopian civilization. Now, they must team up with humans once again to secure the success of their species.
Prime Video ordered the eight-episode sequel series in October 2022. It’s developed by co-writers Kyle Hunter and Ariel Shaffir and features original cast members Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Michael Cera, David Krumholtz, and Edward Norton reprising their roles. Will Forte, Natasha Rothwell, Sam Richardson and Yassir Lester are voicing new characters. Rogen also co-created the original film alongside Evan Goldberg and served as a producer.
“Sausage Party” originally debuted at SXSW in March 2016 before being released that August in theaters. The R-rated film grossed approximately $140 million worldwide against a reported budget of $19 million. The film followed anthropomorphic food items living in a local supermarket, with one sausage, Frank (Rogen), discovering that he will eventually be eaten. After he tells his food friends about their fate, they attempt to escape their demise.
In his review of the original “Sausage Party” film, Variety film critic Joe Leydon called Rogen “the most subversively sincere religious allegorist working in movies today. Better still, he can be pretty damn funny while spiking freewheeling zaniness with food for thought.”
Shaffir and Hunter are showrunners for the new series and executive produce alongside Rogen, Goldberg, James Weaver and Alex McAtee for Point Grey Pictures; Megan Ellison and Patrick Chu from Annapurna Television and Andrew Millstein. Conrad Vernon serves as the supervising director.
“Sausage Party: Foodtopia” is set to premiere on Prime Video July 11.
