Savannah Guthrie shares a sweet photo with her son as she recovers from eye surgery

Savannah Guthrie is doing her best to stay positive as she recovers from eye surgery.

The Today show host, 47, shared a health update on Friday as she works her way back after having a detached retina repaired. The news anchor’s injury was a result of her 3-year-old son, Charley, accidentally hitting her in the right eye with a toy train in late November — and the post touched on the highs and lows that go along with parenthood.

“A week ago I was worried about having to have surgery and got this text from my mom,” wrote Guthrie, who initially tried a series of laser procedures on her eye to avoid the more serious surgery. “It was two days before Charley’s bday. Mom perspectives are the best perspectives.”

One screenshot Guthrie shared showed a text from her mom asking if her spirits had lifted since sustaining the injury, which caused her to briefly lose full vision in the eye. When the mom of two replied, “Sorta,” her mom reminded her, “Three years ago today, you were waiting with bated breath for this new little baby to bring joy to your heart. And every day he has except maybe for the day he threw the train into your eye. Love u. Don’t fret.”

Guthrie’s post continued with some eye humor, “Thanks to everyone for the prayers and good wishes. Things are looking up! I mean I’m not (looking up), but things are [emoji hearts]. Hope to SEE everybody soon!!”

It also included a photo of Guthrie getting a hug from Charley while she recovers at home after the surgery. She has to rest face down and be completely immobile as the eye heals.

On Wednesday, Guthrie shared an “out of office” message alerting her fans that she would be away from the morning show as she fixed “massive tear” in her retina and the retina detachment.” She said her husband, Michael Feldman, “swooped in like a superhero” to help her and pick up any slack with their kids, also including daughter Vale, 5. (Vale has been singing songs to cheer up mom as she recovers, it was reported on the show.)

Guthrie first shared the news of her injury on the show on Nov. 27. After the sharp train hit her eye, she “lost her vision in my right eye about 24 hours later,” she said, explaining, “It was so blurry from ... blood in my eye that it completely blocked my vision.” Calling the injury “serious,” she said her doctors we “were afraid my retina would detach,” so they started the “laser procedures to avoid having to do the whole surgery.” Guthrie continued to work — in glasses — despite the injury, but apparently the laser procedures didn’t help enough and she had to have the surgery anyway.

It’s unclear when Guthrie will be back to work. While her co-host Hoda Kotb said she would be recovering for “a little bit,” ophthalmologist Dr. Annie Negrin previously said on the Today show that the recovery period for the surgery could be up to three weeks of complete immobility in that awkward face-down position.
