Saweetie Calls Out Fan Who Thinks Her Success Is Due To Colorism
Saweetie doesn’t play around when it comes to discrimination.
In a since-deleted tweet shared on Saturday (Sept. 28), one critic wrote, “I bet Saweetie wakes up every morning, brushes her teeth, looks in the mirror, and thanks God for colorism.”
The “ICY GRL” rapper replied the following morning, shutting any accusations that her success correlates with colorism.
“Yikes, tasteless humor. Nothing witty or clever about this whatsoever,” Saweetie wrote. “Matter of fact, joking about a serious psychological battle is never funny. If you don’t agree with my art that’s fine, but don’t identify me with a behavior that condones discrimination. Because I don’t. Thanks.”
Despite the user deleting the tweet and setting their profile to private, reactions poured in from other fans and critics alike.
“Mind you colorism hasn’t really benefited her career,” one on the opposing side wrote as another chimed in, “You benefit from colorism like all those who are considered light skin do. You might not thank God for it, but you’re part of the system whether you like it or not.”
Meanwhile, those reacting in Saweetie’s defense wrote tweets like “See & this is why I respect you.” Someone else added, “They hate a pretty rich b***h unprovoked.”
This isn’t the first time the Bay Area native has had to defend her Blackness, in spite of her biracial identity.
Back in 2021, a video surfaced of her and Too $hort chatting on Instagram Live, which led to him apologizing for his seemingly colorist stance. Regardless of him praising his affinity for “mixed heritage women,” Saweetie expressed, “Black women are beautiful, period.”
