Saweetie returns to her high school alma mater in new music video

(FOX40.COM) — Hip-hop artist Saweetie returned to her Sacramento-area roots in her latest music video.

The Grammy-nominated rapper released the accompanying video for her latest single “My Best” on Thursday. The video was co-directed by Saweetie and was shot on location at her alma mater Monterey Trail High School in Elk Grove.

The video entirely takes place at Monterey Trail with the rapper reciting her lyrics in different areas of campus. Saweetie, whose real name is Diamonté Harper, is shown rapping in a classroom, the gymnasium, cafeteria, and the school’s weight room.

One of the scenes from the video includes a shot of a banner that shows the school’s past athletes of the year winners. The rapper’s real name is shown on the banner for the 2011 female honor.

Saweetie, who was born in the Bay Area, is a former standout athlete at the Monterey Trail, playing volleyball for the Mustangs before graduating in 2011.

In a 2021 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Saweetie told the publication that growing up in both the Bay Area and Sacramento region helped influence her approach to writing music.

“I definitely feel like those two regions shaped me into the woman I am today,” Saweetie said.
