Scott Pilgrim Takes Off Finale Teases More Adventures to Come; EPs Address the Likelihood of Season 2

The journey may not have been mapped out exactly as fans expected, but Netflix’s anime-style Scott Pilgrim Takes Off ultimately arrives at a happy ending for its titular slacker and the girl of his dreams. (All the better that it comes after an unimaginably epic team-up of Ramona’s exes.)

But is everything really wrapped up? A mid-credits scene in Episode 8 finds Gideon/Gordon (voiced by Jason Schwartzman) menacingly suggesting that it’s “time for the real game to begin,” with Julie (Aubrey Plaza) hyping him up: “The Goose is loose! Honk honk, f–kers!”

If there’s more story to be mined from this curious little tag, neither Scott Pilgrim creator Bryan Lee O’Malley nor fellow executive producer BenDavid Grabinski are thinking about it — at least not right now.

“We’ve been too busy,” O’Malley tells TVLine. “It’s really hard to think about what could happen next, especially when we’re producing the show.”

Adds Grabinski, “We just wanted to make the best show that we could, that had a satisfying ending emotionally and narratively. And then we could think about that other stuff later.”

In crafting these eight episodes, the duo “wanted to have something where, if there was no more after that, you didn’t feel robbed.” The goal was for everything, thematically and emotionally, to be resolved by the end of the season.

“Obviously we love these characters and this world, but we just put like our entire brains and souls and whatever into these eight,” Grabinski says.

Based on O’Malley’s Scott Pilgrim graphic novels, Netflix’s eight-episode anime series reunited the 2010 live-action film’s cast to voice their characters in a complete reimagining of the story fans have known and loved for nearly two decades. Thanks to a truly unpredictable twist in Episode 1, viewers spent less time with Scott this season than expected, instead getting to fully immerse themselves in the complicated lives of Ramona and her evil (or not-so-evil) exes.
