'Scrubs’ Fan Theory About Janitor Is Going Viral: Who People Really Think He Was to J.D.
The employees of Sacred Heart Hospital in the hit medical sitcom Scrubs have certainly left people talking, but not as much as Janitor. Not only was he mysterious and a little bit out there, but he also happened to be the only character without a real name. And now, fans of the show have taken to Reddit to try to figure out why. Keep scrolling for more.
Inside the 'Scrubs' janitor fan theory going viral
It’s no surprise that people believe that the janitor on the show – named Janitor (Neil Flynn) – is a bit odd, and sometimes ecliptic. What is surprising, though, is people online believe that the character was only ever a figment of Dr. John “J.D.” Dorian’s “J.D.” imagination. For most of the show's first season, J.D. – played by Zach Braff – was the only person to ever interact with Janitor.
Fans of the show have even taken to Reddit to show their support for this theory.
Writes one user, “I guess that also explains why he didn't have a name outside ‘janitor.’”
Another user even took the opportunity to mention the show's rumored revival, writing, “If the remake really happens, this will for sure be a plot point.”
Scrubs fans also took the time to praise Flynn for his hilarious performance in the show by writing things like, “Neil Flynn's performance as the Janitor was a game-changer. His character added so much depth and humor to the show.”
“Neil Flynn is an absolute treasure,” wrote another.
No one from the cast or crew has commented on this theory.
Other 'Scrubs' fan theories that have viewers talking
Janitor being a figment of imagination isn’t the only theory that has the patients of Sacred Heart Hospital talking, though. There are actually quite a few other theories about the medical sitcom floating around online, and we have found the other two that fans need to keep an eye on.
J.D., Dr. Cox and Dr. Kelso are all the same doctor but at different career phases
Despite being played by different actors, people on Reddit were quick to believe a fan theory suggesting that J.D. (Braff), Dr. Perry Cox (John. C McGinley) and Dr. Bob Kelso (Ken Jenkins) are actually the same person.
Reads the Reddit post: “These three are the same doctor, who starts out as a wide-eyed idealist, and gradually ends up selling more and more of their soul, to the point where the only way they can live with what they do is act like the monster those less experienced see them as and pretend it's not getting to them. By the end, everyone will hate him, but no more than he already hates himself.”
Other users, however, weren't so quick to agree with one writing, “This is less a fan theory and more just, understanding the themes of the show.”
Another user had similar thoughts and commented, “I don't know that I agree with the actual theory of them being the same doctor, but it's an interesting enough insight into the writing of the show.”
This theory has yet to be confirmed or denied.
Janitor was a former psychologist
There are many more theories about who Janitor really was, but one suggests he was a doctor himself.
The viral Reddit post reads: “Using his knowledge in this field, he was able to have fun experimenting on the people of the hospital by toying with them. This explains why he was always messing with JD. He was able to lie his way into getting a date with Elliot or a paycheck despite not working, and how he was able to have his own following in the Brain Trust. He knew how others would react, so he took advantage of them.”
Wonder what actor Neil Flynn thinks of this one!
