How to see 'Bill & Ted' one last time at Metrocenter before the Phoenix mall is demolished

Eventually there won't be any sites in Arizona where “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure” was filmed.

But that’s not the case quite yet. Harkins Theatres, the city of Phoenix and Metrocenter Mall — where parts of the 1989 movie were shot — are partnering for a screening of the film in a Metrocenter parking lot before the mall is demolished.

The mall, which opened in 1973, closed in 2020. Developers bought it and plan to tear down much of the site and redevelop it.

The film is likely to be shown on May 21, a spokesperson for Harkins said. Exact location details — as in, which parking lot, as well as the time — are still being worked out.

Wherever it lands, a Harkins food truck will be there, with popcorn and other treats available for purchase.

'Be excellent to each other': Why Bill and Ted are the heroes we need

In 2022, a Tempe Circle K hosted a farewell 'Bill & Ted' screening

In 2022, Harkins held screenings at a Tempe Circle K where other parts of the movie were filmed before it closed. That site was where one of the greatest lines in cinema was uttered by Keanu Reeves (Ted): “Strange things are afoot at the Circle K.”

When are they not?

When Alex Winter, who played Bill, found out from The Arizona Republic that the store was closing, he tweeted the perfect response: “All we are…” It’s a reference to Ted quoting the wretched Kansas song, “Dust in the Wind.”

Winter hasn’t commented on the Metrocenter closing. But he’s got time.

How to watch 'Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure' at Metrocenter

A May 21 screening is tentatively scheduled to take place in a parking lot at Metrocenter at Interstate 17 and Peoria Avenue in Phoenix.

The screening setup will be similar to Harkins’ “Moonlight Cinema,” the spokesperson said.

The time and exact location have not yet been announced. Check Harkins.com for more information when it becomes available.
