The new Twisters movie has been a whirlwind success!

But fans of the original 1996 film may have been a bit concerned when the news of the 2024 movie was first announced. That's not much of a shocker as sequel movies and remakes are often hotly debated. Well, for those who threw caution to the wind and saw the new flick, you'll be happy to know that there were plenty of references to the 1996 movie featured in the new blockbuster film! That's right, the movie's director, Lee Isaac Chung, paid homage to the original by adding in some Easter eggs and clever references that super fans will love.

In case you missed it, the new Twisters movie stars Glen Powell as Tyler Owens, Daisy Edgar-Jones as Kate Carter, and Anthony Ramos as Javi. The original, however, starred Bill Paxton as Bill Harding and Helen Hunt as Dr. Jo Harding—two tornado icons! And while the characters and cast might be different, the movies share some fun similarities along with plenty of hidden references throughout. The subliminal Easter eggs act as a nod to Harding and Hunt's characters, including dialogue, scenery, and other minute details that you might have missed. But don't worry, we've chased them all down and rounded them up below. If you're feeling nostalgic, check out how the new Twisters movie references the '90s film.

Stay on the edge of your seat with these movies:

Dorothy!

In the 1996 movie Twister, fans were introduced to Dorothy—a piece of technology that might as well have been the main character! It was responsible for studying and analyzing those treacherous twisters, after all. The 2024 movie clearly had to add it in, too! It's used for the same purpose but it looks a little more modernized.

The Red Truck

Bill's red Dodge Ram 2500 from the first movie is essentially what saved him and his crew from the wretched winds. Well, that car was honored in the 2024 rendition with Tyler's red "Tornado Wrangler." The main difference between the two was the fact that Tyler's truck could shoot fireworks from its top.

Repeated Dialogue

For the ultimate Twister fans out there, the dialogue is pretty important. So, when Kate tells Javi "we've probably stayed in Oklahoma," it should have sounded familiar. And then when Javi jokes that's he's glad to have her back in the state, she reminds him that she's "not back," which should have really sold the deal for long time fans. Why? Well, because this was the exact interaction between Bill and his team at the start of Twister.

The Sunflowers

When Kate visits her childhood home in the new Twisters movie, viewers see her lawn covered in beautiful sunflowers. This wasn't just for aesthetic reasons, but as a means to pay homage to the original movie's end scene in a sunflower field. Fun fact: the production designer, Patrick Sullivan, began his career in film when he planted the sunflower seeds in the original movie!
