Last night's VMAs may have been a showcase of the music industry's top players—that medieval-themed Chappell Roan performance, anyone??—but almost important as the music was the fashion.

The stars pulled out all the sartorial stops for the awards ceremony. Taylor Swift continued her edgy fashion streak with a yellow plaid corseted Dior gown with a dramatic, leg-baring cut-out, before changing into a custom Monse number (complete with sparkly galactic-coded UFO print) later in the evening. Katy Perry also put on a dramatic display, going for a just-been-shipwrecked look in a shredded white gown paired with wet hair and later changing into a plunging blue-gray tasselled gown. As for Sabrina Carpenter, she paid homage to another icon of the industry, wearing a vintage Bob Mackie gown that was previously worn by Madonna at the 1991 Academy Awards.

Two main themes of the evening? Britney Spears and space. Tate McRae and Megan Thee Stallion both recreated iconic looks once worn by the pop star, while Carpenter gave a nod to Spears' "Oops! I Did It Again" music video when she made out with an astronaut on stage—she then went one step further and also made out with an alien. With Swift's UFO-themed outfit and Perry's "ET" performance, the 2024 VMAs were officially a rather retro, cosmic affair.

After the ceremony, the stars kept the party going at an after party at Electric Lady Studios in New York City's Greenwich Village—here are some of their best looks.

In her third outfit of the evening, Taylor Swift wore a different version of her second look, slipping into what appeared to be a custom spin on Monse's Harness Tapestry Dress along with their matching UFO Tapestry Boyfriend Jacket. And because nearly all of Swift's outfits contain an Easter egg of some sort, Fans are convinced she's hinting at a space-themed "Down Bad" music video in the pipeline.

Sabrina Carpenter swapped out her 1991 vintage Bob Mackie dress in favor of a spring-summer 1996 Gucci by Tom Ford lace dress from Tab Vintage. The sheer minidress, which is, incidentally, very on-trend this fall, revealed her white underwear set below. She paired it with towering white platform boots and a white handbag covered in red and pink lipstick kisses.

Canadian pop singer Tate McRae wore a black lace minidress to the VMAs ceremony, paying homage to Spears' iconic 2001 VMAs outfit. For the after party, McRae slipped into something a little more sparkly, opting for a brown and pink minidress covered in elaborate sequined embroidery.

Zo? Kravitz

Zo? Kravitz actually skipped the main ceremony and instead made a very chic appearance at the after party. She went braless in a sheer black top, which she paired with black jeans and a black bazer jacket.

Camila Cabello

Tyla pushed the concept of the cutout to the extreme with a gravity-defying denim jumpsuit that was more cutout than fabric.

Suki Waterhouse

Suki Waterhouse made an appearance at the after party wearing a simple black midi dress with a midriff cut-out styled with a fabulous black feather boa. She wore the same look to the ceremony earlier in the evening. As she joked to Access Hollywood of the look, she felt a little like an "old chicken." She also spoke about her six-month-old daughter and praised her fiancé Robert Pattinson's fatherhood skills. "He's the greatest," she gushed to Access Hollywood.
