Selena Gomez on body changes from lupus: 'People started attacking me... that really messed me up'

Sara M Moniuszko, USA TODAY

Selena Gomez is sharing another side to her battle with lupus: her weight fluctuations and how it affected her.

During an appearance on the Giving Back Generation podcast with Raquelle Stevens, the singer, 27, opened up about how people treated her.

"I have lupus and deal with kidney issues and high blood pressure, so I deal with a lot of health issues, and for me that’s when I really started noticing more of the body image stuff," she said. "So for me, I really started to notice when people started attacking me for that."

She continued, "And in reality, that's just my truth, I fluctuate... And that got to me big time. I think for me, that really messed me up for a bit."

She added the weight change is the result of a "combination" of things.

"It's the medication that I have to take for the rest of my life, it depends even on the month, to be honest," she said.

Gomez has been open about her health struggles since revealing her lupus diagnosis in 2015, being upfront about the impact the autoimmune disease has had on her health, career and quality of life.

In 2017, Gomez revealed via Instagram she'd received a kidney transplant as part of her ongoing treatment for lupus, explaining, "it was what I needed to do for my overall health."

The singer has also been open about insecurities in the past.

During Coach's first-ever episode of their "Dream It Real" podcast in April, Gomez said too much screen time on Instagram made her "kind of depressed looking at these people who look beautiful and amazing, and it would just get me down a lot so I just think taking breaks is really important."
