The Serpent Queen Cancelled at Starz; Minnie Driver-Led Spinoff in the Works
The Serpent Queen is no more: Starz has cancelled the historical drama starring Samantha Morton after two seasons, TVLine has confirmed. (Our sister site Deadline first reported the news.)
A source tells TVLine that the decision not to renew was a difficult one, because the network is proud of the series and was pleased with how the Season 2 finale ended for fans.

The story may not end there, however. Starz is developing a spinoff centered around Minnie Driver’s Queen Elizabeth I, who joined the cast in Season 2. Executive producers Justin Haythe and Erwin Stoff will return for the spinoff, with Driver expected to reprise her role.
The Serpent Queen starred Morton as Catherine de Medici, the Queen Regent of France, with her son Charles IX serving as France’s king in Season 2. “As France falls into political and religious turmoil, Catherine struggles to maintain her power, but The Serpent Queen will do whatever she needs to regain control,” per the official description.
Debuting in September 2022, The Serpent Queen was renewed for a second season a month later. Season 2 didn’t debut, though, until this July. The cancellation caps the show’s run at a total of 16 episodes.
