Following the 2024 presidential election results, the hosts of late night are addressing the serious elephant in the room while attempting to keep things light.

Seth Meyers opened Wednesday’s Late Night show by saying it’s “a privilege to be here with you, to not feel alone,” and how “we’re not going to let anything take that joy away, even when we’re talking about things that are not particularly joyful.”

After admitting he voted for Kamala Harris, Meyers continued his opening speech by saying what many Democrats already know. “I don’t think Donald Trump is a good person. I’d even go so far as to say he’s a bad person. Now in my defense, I’m only basing that on everything I’ve ever been taught about what makes someone good or bad.”

While acknowledging that it’s still a privilege to to live in a democratic country, he then said the mission of Late Night was “to find laughter, to find connection, to find joy even when things are bleak.”

Meanwhile, Stephen Colbert got right to the point on The Late Show. “Well, f—. It happened… again. After a bizarre and vicious campaign fueled by a desperate need not to go to jail, Donald Trump has won the 2024 election,” he said in his opening monologue.

“The deep shock and sense of loss is enormous. But let’s look at the bright side: this way, at least there will be a peaceful transfer of power. Mike Pence, olly olly oxen free,” added Colbert. “All day yesterday, I was walking around, proudly wearing my ‘I voted’ sticker. Today, I wore my ‘I am questioning my fundamental belief in the goodness of humanity’ sticker.”

The comedian noted, “As a late-night host, people often say to me, ‘Come on, part of has gotta want Trump to win, because he gives you so much material to work with.’ No, no. No one tells the guy who cleans the bathroom, ‘Wow, you must love it when someone has explosive diarrhea. There’s so much material for you to work with.'”

On a more serious note, Colbert explained that several people apologized he had to do a show in the wake of Trump’s win. “Which is nice of them to say, but I don’t have to do a show. I get to do a show tonight,” he said.

“Because especially at times like this, what do we most want to be? Not alone,” added Colbert. “So, thanks for being here.”
