'Sex and the City' star Sarah Jessica Parker's husband Matthew Broderick turned down appearing on the show — more than once
For all the men Sex and City’s Carrie Bradshaw dated, none of them was ever played by Matthew Broderick, the real-life husband of actress Sarah Jessica Parker.
As Broderick and Parker reveal in a new profile in the New York Times, the reason for that is simple: husband and wife of more than 22 years didn’t want to work together. In fact, Broderick went as far as passing on several offers to appear on the wildly popular HBO show, which ran from 1998 to 2004 and spawned two movies.
One of the specific parts he remembered being offered was a memorable one from 1999, which eventually went to Justin Theroux.
“The premature ejaculator,” Broderick told the newspaper. “Think of that decision I had to make.”
Parker said she would become nervous when Broderick would come on set just to visit her. She attributed it to the vulnerable work of acting. Sex and the City, in particular, had to have been particularly awkward for SJP at times, because the characters dealt so frankly with sex and relationships.
“I’d get so nervous,” Parker said. “Like, Matthew’s here! Don’t look at me!”
Broderick knows what it’s like to feel that way.
“That’s the thing,” he said. “You don’t want anybody to see.”
Parker add, “It’s all so embarrassing.”
During the interview, Parker began breaking out in hives just talking about the idea of Broderick appearing on her former series.
Yet Parker is comfortable working alongside her Ferris Bueller’s Day Off husband in a new Broadway production of Neil Simon’s “Plaza Suite.” It runs for 17 weeks, and they’ll do eight shows a week.
Perhaps the two are OK with working together now, because their relationship started when they were on the stage together. Both appeared in a 1996 staging of Simon’s How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.
