'Sex and the City' Real-Life Relationships: Learn About the True Love Lives Of the Actresses Playing Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda

To watch Sex and the City is to be intimately acquainted with the personal lives of Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda. During its six-year run from 1998 to 2004, the show was beloved for its refreshingly honest and funny approach to sex and relationships, and years later, its take on female sexuality remains entertaining and bold as ever.

The SATC ladies had many onscreen relationships, from juicy one-night stands to troubled marriages to long-lasting “situationships,” and over the course of the series, we came to feel deeply invested in them (looking at you, Steve Brady and Aidan Shaw!).

If you’ve ever wondered what the love lives of the cast of one of America’s most beloved TV shows are like offscreen, look no further — we’ve gathered a fabulous guide to the Sex and the City spouses you should know.

The long-married Sarah Jessica Parker (Carrie Bradshaw)

Sarah Jessica Parker has been married to fellow actor Matthew Broderick since 1997. They met through New York City’s theater scene, and have performed in multiple Broadway plays together over the years. The couple has three children — their son, James, was born in 2002, while their twin daughters, Tabitha and Marion, were born via surrogate in 2009.

Prior to her marriage, Parker had relationships with Robert Downey Jr. and John F. Kennedy Jr., but when she paired up with Broderick, it was clear he was the one.

Parker and Broderick are known for keeping their high-profile marriage private, and in an interview, she said, “I’ve always said one of the reasons we’ve had success is because we don’t talk about our marriage. I’m not flattering myself that anyone’s discussing my marriage, but we’re certainly not going to add to it by saying, ‘Well, this is why it works.’ Next thing you know, there’ll be a very public divorce. So we just try to respect each other.” Clearly, this strategy has worked well for them!

The thrice-married Kim Cattrall (Samantha Jones)

Kim Cattrall has been married three times. From 1977 to 1979, she was married to writer Larry Davis, but their short union ended in annulment. She was then married to architect Andre J. Lyson from 1982 to 1989. Her third and final marriage, to musician and engineer Mark Levinson, lasted from 1998 to 2004. Cattrall and Levinson cowrote the racy book Satisfaction: The Art of the Female Orgasm in 2002.

Cattrall has not had any children, but has said, “I am not a biological parent, but I am a parent. I have young actors and actresses that I mentor, I have nieces and nephews that I am very close to.”

Since 2016, Cattrall has been dating Russell Thomas, who previously worked for the BBC. Reflecting on being in a long-term relationship after multiple divorces, she said, “I love him. And he was worth waiting for,” and added, “I'm very comfortable around him. He's a firecracker and he's got a wicked sense of humor. And he's easy on the eyes!"

The love life of Kristin Davis (Charlotte York)

Kristin Davis has never been married. While her Sex and the City character was famously the most marriage-minded of the bunch, she said, “I’m not married. I’ve never been married. It’s not my thing. I was never focused on it. It was never like a goal, let’s say.”

Davis has previously dated Aaron Sorkin and Alec Baldwin, but she hasn’t publicly revealed anything about her current love life.

In 2011, Davis adopted her daughter, Gemma Rose. She adopted her son, Wilson, in 2018.

The romantic journey of Cynthia Nixon (Miranda Hobbes)

Cynthia Nixon has been married to Christine Marinoni, an activist for gay rights and education, since 2012. She was previously in a long relationship with Danny Mozes, a photographer and her high school sweetheart, from 1988 to 2003. Nixon and Mozes had two sons, Seph (born in 1996) and Charles (born in 2002). Marinoni gave birth to Nixon’s youngest son, Max, in 2011.

Nixon hadn’t dated a woman before, and said at the beginning of her relationship with Marinoni, “Christine kept waiting for the other shoe to drop, for me to panic about what this would mean — to my career or to myself — as if somehow I just hadn't noticed that she was a woman. And then she met my mother, and that was when she stopped worrying about it.”

Like her wife, Nixon is an outspoken advocate for the gay community, and her journey has been reflected in the Sex and the City reboot And Just Like That . . .,  as the show features Miranda navigating her newfound queer identity.
