After “Shōgun’s” record-breaking 14 victories at last week’s Creative Arts Emmys, the question wasn’t whether it’ll extend its own record at Sunday’s Primetime Emmy Awards but by how many wins it will do so. The answer was four, making the FX drama’s grand total of 18 Emmys the new benchmark for most wins by a program in a single year.

“Shōgun” won Best Drama Series, lead trophies for Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai and drama directing for Frederick E.O. Toye for “Crimson Sky. It had double bids in writing and supporting actor but lost the categories to “Slow Horses” and Billy Crudup (“The Morning Show”), respectively. Best Drama Supporting Actress was the only above-the-line category in which it failed to earn a nomination.

Last Sunday, “Shōgun,” which led all nominees with 25 bids, broke “John Adams'” 16-year-old record for most wins in one year just at the Creative Arts Awards. “John Adams” received 13 Emmys total in 2008 between Creative Arts and the main ceremony. “Shōgun” won 14 of the 16 Creative Arts categories in which it was nominated, losing its two music bids for score to “Only Murders in the Building” and main title theme to “Palm Royale.”

Some shows have come within touching distance of “John Adams'” record in recent years. “Game of Thrones” won 12 Emmys in 2019 for its final season, while “The Queen’s Gambit” scored 11 statuettes in 2021. Last year, “The Bear” received 10 Emmys, breaking the record for most wins by a comedy in a single year and the most wins by a first-year show. “The Bear” broke its own record for a comedy this year with 11 wins.
