“What We Do in the Shadows ”Cast Says Concluding After 6 Seasons Is a 'Smart Decision': 'It's Ending on a High Note'
Earlier this week, FX announced that the sixth and final season of 'What We Do in the Shadows' will premiere on October 21
The cast of What We Do in the Shadows is ready to close this chapter — however, bittersweet it may be.
On Thursday, July 25, fans were in for a treat when What We Do in the Shadows kicked off its farewell tour by debuting the first episode from the upcoming season at San Diego Comic-Con.
During a panel discussion about what's to come in the final season, the cast opened up about how they reacted to learning that the beloved FX series would be coming to an end. After actor Matt Berry and executive producer Paul Simms recalled learning of its cancellation on Christmas morning, Mark Proksch said the news "didn't really change the mood too much" when they returned to set.
"We all have a lot of fun on set, and I think like Matt and Paul said it's a good time," he explained. "You don't want to overstay your welcome and you don't want to become a parody of yourself. And I think six seasons in this day and age is just [phenomenal]."
"I think the goal is to go out with fans like this at Hall H, and still be able to fill it up," he continued before Simms added, "You don't want to stay on too long that you're in the small conference rooms."
Kristen Schaal, on the other hand, disagreed with the rest of her costars' sentiments and joked that What We Do in the Shadows could "have gone on and on."
"There's so much to explore in this world," she quipped. "My character definitely could have come back for a lot more episodes. It was the first project I've ever worked on where I knew it was gonna end. Usually there's this feeling of like next year, so now we have to say exactly how we felt about each other."
Despite her desire to film more seasons, Schaal admitted that she was "happy that it's ending on a high note."
"I think that is a smart decision, but I'm sad because there's no other show like it in the world," she added.
Earlier this week, FX announced that the sixth and final season of What We Do in the Shadows will premiere on October 21. The season will consist of 11 episodes and will debut on FX with episodes available to stream the next day on Hulu.
Created by Flight of the Conchords' Jemaine Clement and based on the 2015 film of the same name, What We Do in the Shadows follows the everyday lives of four vampires in Staten Island, New York, who struggle to fit in with the human world — with many snafus along the way.
The show stars Harvey Guillén as Guillermo de la Cruz, Kayvan Novak as Nandor the Relentless, Berry as Laszlo Cravensworth, Natasia Demetriou as Nadja of Antipaxtos, Proksch as "energy vampire" Colin Robinson and Schaal as The Guide, among many recurring and one-off guest stars like Beanie Feldstein, Nick Kroll, Mark Hamill, Fred Armisen, Doug Jones, Vanessa Bayer, Haley Joel Osment, Sofia Coppola, Patton Oswalt and Taika Waititi.
What We Do in the Shadows was nominated for eight Primetime Emmy Awards including outstanding comedy series and outstanding lead actor in a comedy series for Berry.
