The 'Shape of Water' fish man: Hot or not? We polled stars at the Oscars.
Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water was the biggest fish in the sea Sunday at the 90th Academy Awards, taking home four Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director.
The film is beloved (obviously), but it has also been a nonstop source of Twitter jokes for months for its woman-meets-fish man storyline and unexpected implied sex scenes. Elisa Esposito (Sally Hawkins) surely loved Amphibian Man (played by del Toro regular Doug Jones), but what is the general perception of his sexiness. Hot or not?
Naturally, we asked stars walking the red carpet at the show. “Well, to her he was,” Star Wars legend and Oscars presenter Mark Hamill told us (watch above). “It was the Creature From the Black Lagoon, where the victim he was stalking turned around and said, ‘Hey, you’re not so bad.'”
“I don’t know,” said Lil Rel Howery, a breakout star from Best Picture nominee Get Out. “I don’t know how she did it. And we really don’t know what he’s got going on [down there].”
Others were more committal. “I would,” laughed Baby Driver director Edgar Wright. “I’d tap that fish.” The Big Sick writers Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon rated him definitively hot.
Then, of course, there was Laurie Jones, who as wife of actor Doug Jones, gets up close and personal with the man behind Amphibian Man in real life. “Very hot,” she said. “Totally my type.”
