She’s baaack! Maya Rudolph returns to ‘Saturday Night Live’ to portray Kamala Harris during 2024 election cycle
In the lead-up to the 2020 election between Joe Biden and Donald Trump, “Saturday Night Live” called on former cast member Maya Rudolph to portray then-California Senator Kamala Harris. As the Vice Presidential running mate to Biden (portrayed at the time by Jim Carrey), Rudolph brought the laughs as “America’s cool aunt” (watch below) during three episodes in 2019 and six episodes in 2020. Now, our sister site Deadline is reporting that Rudolph is returning to her “SNL” stomping grounds to portray Harris as she gears up for her own 2024 Presidential election against Trump.
But what about “Loot”? The popular Apple TV+ comedy series, which Rudolph produces and stars in, was supposed to start filming Season 3 at the end of August. Well, that show’s schedule has now reportedly been paused to allow for Rudolph’s highly anticipated return to NBC’s late night sketch series. “Loot” is currently nominated for Best Comedy Actress for Rudolph at the 2024 Emmys.

Speaking of the Emmy Awards, Rudolph is a five-time winner for “Big Mouth” (character voice over in 2020, ’21 and ’23) and “Saturday Night Live” (comedy guest actress in 2020 and ’21). She’s currently nominated in those same categories again this year, plus she has that additional bid for “Loot” and an extra “SNL” citation for the “Mother’s Day Monologue” music and lyrics, bringing her 2024 tally to four nominations.

Fans began clamoring for Rudolph’s return to “SNL” from the moment that Biden dropped out of the race and endorsed Harris as the next Democratic Presidential nominee on Sunday, July 21. In the weeks since, momentum has been on Harris’ side, particularly as politicos theorize about who she might tap as her own Vice Presidential running mate. (Trump’s VP pick, J. D. Vance, bears a striking resemblance to Zach Galifianakis, so hopefully the actor isn’t too busy in the coming months.)
When “Saturday Night Live” returns to NBC’s schedule in the fall, it will be celebrating Season 50. That’s a monumental number to be sure, and the show will surely be the talk of the town as it skewers the 2024 Presidential election cycle each and every week. For the record, Biden and Trump are both currently played by in-house stars Mikey Day and James Austin Johnson, respectively. Rudolph was a regular “SNL” cast member for nine seasons between 2000 and 2007.
