Sheryl Crow joins Kyle Meredith to dig into the details of her album, Evolution, a record that comes after Crow announced on Meredith’s show in 2018 that she wouldn’t be making any more LPs (a sentiment she recently echoed). Listen to the new episode above, or wherever you get your podcasts.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee discusses teaming up with producer Mike Elizondo — a Dr. Dre protégé who’s worked with everyone from 50 Cent to Fiona Apple — in an attempt to break away from her usual bag of tricks. Approaching songwriting from a different direction led Crow to consider the cinematic nature of these songs. She isn’t writing for twenty-year-olds, she isn’t writing about sex; this time, fear and empathy permeate her lyricism. It ultimately led to an album’s worth of songs, though she still feels somewhat pessimistic about the state of the LP at large.
“It’s hard for me to celebrate the way that music works now,” she explains. “Because you can feel like your best work is in front of me, but the shot of breaking through all of what’s out there is so slim and nil that instead of me thinking about what can I write that will break through, I write what is it that i can feel really good about a) putting out and b) then go out and playing live.”
This summer, the singer will indeed make good on playing these songs live, as she’s set to hit the road with pop legend P!NK (get tickets here). But don’t expect her to be flying around the arena like her tourmate. “I tried out for cheerleading as a seventh grader, I’m the most not-flexible person ever,” she says with a chuckle. “So, probably not gonna be doing any acrobatics, but I will definitely be trying to sling my guitar a little.”
