This show took home the most People's Choice Awards, even though it's canceled
The 2018 People’s Choice Awards, which aired on the E! network for the first time, took place Sunday night and honored this year’s best in pop culture. However, it was kind of surprising that the TV show that took home the most awards had actually been canceled.
Shadowhunters, which was canceled by Freeform this year after three seasons, took home the awards for Female TV Star of 2018, Male TV Star of 2018, Bingeworthy Show of 2018, and Show of 2018. Even more surprising, according to E! host Giuliana Rancic, is the fact that Shadowhunters didn’t even make the first round of nominees.
Before the show, on E’s Live From the Red Carpet, Rancic asked show stars Harry Shum Jr. and Katherine McNamara how they felt about so many of their fans writing in to get them nominated. “You are truly a fan favorite. The fans, they wrote in, because you weren’t in the actual first round of the nominees for the People’s Choice Awards. The fans wrote in … that special kind of write-in vote — and they got you here and you’re both nominated; the show is nominated. How does that feel?” she asked. McNamara responded, “It’s the most humbling and flooring thing. I mean, the fans have just been so wonderful to us from day one, that it’s kind of come full circle for all of us.” Shum Jr. said, “We were so surprised. You know, they gave us a call. They said, like, ‘You got nominated for this and you weren’t even on the ballot.’ So this is amazing — to be here. We get to dress up and feel stylish, so thank you.”
McNamara, who later won Female TV Star, delivered a very heartfelt acceptance speech, saying, “There’s a Clary quote in City of Ashes – ‘When you love someone, you don’t have a choice. Love takes your choices away.’ I’ve had no choice but to love the Shadowhunters fandom from day one. You trusted us, you came with us on this journey. Thank you for making my life anything but mundane.” McNamara ended her speech thanking the community that has been created by the show, and shared, “Our characters might be your heroes, but you angels are undoubtedly mine. Thank you. This is for you.”
Fans were pretty quick to call out Freeform on Twitter, like these people who tweeted:
