‘Shrinking’ renewed for Season 3 just as Season 2 gains awards momentum
More like “expanding.”
Apple TV+’s hit series “Shrinking,” which just returned for Season 2 on October 16, has already been renewed for Season 3. The half-hour comedy stars Jason Segel as Jimmy Laird and Harrison Ford as Paul Rhoades, two therapists at the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Center whose lives are often even more complicated than their patients’. “Shrinking” is one of Apple’s biggest awards contenders this year on the comedy front, along with the Emmy-winning “Palm Royale.”

“I’m so lucky to work on ‘Shrinking’ with actors, writers and a crew so talented that they all elevate the material,” said creator/writer/producer Bill Lawrence. “I’m even luckier that they are people I’d want to spend time with anyway. Huge thanks to to Apple TV+ and Warner Bros. for the amazing partnership and support. So grateful we get to keep making this show. Onward.”
Lawrence, Segel and Brett Goldstein co-created the show together, and the latter has a recurring guest star role on the second season as Louis, someone who has a tragic connection to Jimmy. Other cast members include Jessica Williams as Gaby, Luke Tennie as Sean, Michael Urie as Brian, Lukita Maxwell as Alice, Christa Miller as Liz and Ted McGinley as Derek.

On the awards front, Season 2 of “Shrinking” is predicted to receive Golden Globe nominations for Best Comedy Series, Segel as Best Comedy Actor, and Ford as Best Supporting Actor. It’s also a potential contender at the Screen Actors Guild Awards in the comedy races, according to Gold Derby odds.
The new episodes have a 75 score at Metacritic, with Alan Sepinwall (Rolling Stone) saying it’s still a “big-hearted comedy that’s unapologetically messy,” and Brian Tallerico (RogerEbert.com) noting that “the humor is sharper this year; the emotion lands harder.” Season 2 will continue streaming every Wednesday until the finale airs Christmas Day, December 25, 2024.
The first season of “Shrinking” debuted in January of 2023 and reaped nominations at the Emmys, Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards, Writers Guild Awards and more. Gold Derby recently caught up with Williams at the African American Film Critics Association TV Honors, where she was being recognized as television’s Best Breakout Star. “I’m really honored and super nervous. I feel like I had some adrenaline,” she told us on the red carpet.
