Sigourney Weaver Says She “Would Consider” Returning as Ellen Ripley

Fans of the Alien franchise have been eating well this year, with Fede Alvarez's addition landing in theaters two weeks ago to rave reviews from fans and critics alike who had high praise for the direction the beloved series is heading.

Now, Sigourney Weaver has teased that she would be open to reprising her iconic role: Ellen Ripley.

The three-time Academy Award nominee is currently at the Venice Film Festival, receiving a Lifetime Achievement Golden Lion for her career in cinema.

During an interview with Deadline, Weaver was asked about her thoughts on the recent James Cameron quote, "No one ever dies in science fiction", with the reporter asking, "Is there a future for Ellen Ripley on screen?"

Weaver didn't shy away from the question, saying, "I feel like she's never far away from me, but on the other hand I have yet to read a script that said "you have got to do this." So for me, she is in this other dimension, safe from the Alien for the time being."

This suggests that Weaver would be open to a return if the story makes sense and the script is good enough.

"I don't really think about it, but you know, it's not completely impossible, and certainly a lot of good filmmakers are inspired by the material," Weaver said, going on to say, "How much does the public really need or want another Ripley movie?"

Weaver continued, "I don't really sit around and think about it, but if it came up, I would consider it. It has come up a bunch of times, but I'm also busy doing other things. Ripley has earned her rest."

The star also said that she hasn't seen Alien: Romulus, and when asked if there were any murmurs about her appearing in it, she said, "There wasn't a discussion about Ripley being in it."

So, while it seems that we shouldn't expect to see Ellen Ripley make her return to the Alien universe any time soon, that door may not be closed forever.
