Simone Ashley, Maria Sharapova, Demi Lovato and More Get Ready With Prabal Gurung Before the Met Gala
For the Met Gala 2024, Prabal Gurung assembled a group of Laufey, Maria Sharapova, Simone Ashley, Demi Lovato, Amanda Fuhrman, Gayle Rankin and Ugbad Abdi to dress for the night. We tagged along for the night to capture the group’s getting-ready process and chat with Gurung about his design process.

“The Garden of Time theme for me is about celebrating beautiful, cherished garments that are designed for longevity, and stand the test of time. It is about a timeless elegance that is authentic to each wearer and designer, rather than following trends. Reawakening fashion is a call to reinterpret the classics — to put your own unique spin on each piece as a work of art, invigorating the garments with life and energy.”
Could you tell us a bit about each look/woman you dressed?
“Absolutely! I really wanted to try to express the story of ‘The Garden of Time’ from start to finish — with the softness of flowers picked in the garden through the range of colors and materials for each guest, even through the flowers freezing each time they’re picked in this tale.
The blush organza in Laufey’s gown, the daffodil soft organic cotton from Boll & Branch in Maria’s gown, the sheer rose tulle in Radhika’s gown, and the icy blue organza in Amanda’s gown all represented the idea of bringing life, exploring textures and reimagining beauty in many different forms.
Where the deep midnight of Simone’s sequin gown, the black hand-embroidered crystal on Gayle’s gown, the ombré effect and spider web cage effect of Ugbad’s gown, and the platinum mylar flowers adorned on Demi’s gown represented the story progression, where picking the flower then froze and became something beautiful in a totally different way. Having this range of guests and story to explore was such an exciting opportunity for me to create these gowns.”
What is your favorite part of the night?
“Only one favorite — that’s so hard! I love everything about the Met Gala. It truly is my favorite night of the year. New York comes alive with glamour and exuberance. Every year, we host our table guests for an intimate gathering of calm and togetherness before we head out and hit the carpet, and I really love this time of being with each of the beautiful, chic, inspiring women we have the privilege of dressing and hosting. This year, we’re getting ready together at The Plaza hotel and will be toasting with my favorite sake cocktails from Sake ONO to get us in the mood for the party of the year.”
