‘Skeleton Crew’ Trailer: ‘Star Wars’ Takes a Cue from ‘Stranger Things’ with This Kid-Focused Adventure Across the Galaxy
Strap in, hold tight, and blast off because a new entry into the “Star Wars” universe is on approach. The latest project from Lucasfilm and Disney+, “Skeleton Crew” has been promised as an unexpected adventure that takes four younglings from the safety of their home planet and sends them on a mystifying journey through unexplored corners of the galaxy. A trailer for the series premiered at D23 on Friday, August 9 and can be viewed below.
The child cast is led by newcomers Ravi Cabot-Conyers as Wim, Kyriana Kratter as KB, Robert Timothy Smith as Neel — a character of the same species as Max Rebo in “Return of the Jedi” — and Ryan Kiera Armstrong as Fern. They’re joined by Academy Award nominee Jude Law in the role of Jod Na Nawood, a force user the children encounter in a prison. Whether he proves to be on the light or dark side remains to be seen, but the story does take place in a time when it seems like Jedi are in short supply. Tunde Adebimpe (“Twisters”) and Kerry Condon (“The Banshees of Inisherin”) are also featured in undisclosed roles, with Nick Frost (“Shaun of the Dead”) lending his vocal talents to a droid named SM 33.

“Skeleton Crew” also marks the introduction of Disney and Marvel favorite Jon Watts (“Spider-Man: No Way Home”) to the Lucasfilm banner. He created the series with his frequent collaborator Christopher Ford, with whom he co-wrote “Cop Car” and “Spider-Man: Homecoming.” Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni also serve as producers on the project, lending their experience from “The Mandalorian” and “The Book of Boba Fett” to this new series. Directors behind some of the episodes include Academy-Award winners the Daniels (“Everything, Everywhere, All at Once”), Bryce Dallas Howard (who directed on “The Mandalorian”), Jake Schreier (Marvel Studios’ upcoming “Thunderbolts*”), David Lowery (“Peter Pan & Wendy”), and even Lee Isaac Chung (“Twisters”).
Similar to Netflix’s “Stranger Things,” the series was inspired by the Amblin films of the 1980s with the official synopsis reading, “When four kids make a mysterious discovery on their seemingly safe home planet, they get lost in a strange and dangerous galaxy. Finding their way home, meeting unlikely allies and enemies will be a greater adventure than they ever imagined.” The story is set to take place following the event of “Return of the Jedi,” making it coincide with the timeline of “The Mandalorian.”
“Skeleton Crew” wasn’t the only Marvel project teased at D23 on Friday. Fans in attendance also got their first look at “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” the feature-length movie jumping off from the hit Disney+ series, though that trailer hasn’t been released online yet.
