Skepta Premieres ‘Tribal Mark’ Short Film In Los Angeles
On Tuesday night (April 16) in Los Angeles, Skepta invited guests to SoHo Warehouse for an exclusive screening of his short film Tribal Mark. The rapper was joined at the event by Mowalola, Bovi, Joivan Wade, Jacob Scipio, DJ Snake, Peri Rosenzweig, and Big Zeeko, amongst others who gathered to tune in to the exciting story.
Taking place between Skepta’s Coachella performances, the intimate audience lounged on cozy couches and stools, sharing signature cocktails made with Martell Blue Swift. With a specialty menu inspired by the film, a popular choice was the Nigerian Swift Sour, a drink balancing cognac, soy milk, and citrus.
As the night continued, a DJ set featuring music from the film took place, including the theme track “Jangrova” by Skepta, ODUMODUBLVCK, and Idris Elba.
Tribal Mark serves the first film from the 41-year-old’s, real name Joseph Adenuga, 1PLUS1 Production company. Additionally, he serves as the co-directer and executive producer. According to a press release, the film acts as an origin story, signaling a wider cinematic universe that will center around our anti-hero character, Tribal Mark, and his role within the undercover Black Secret Service – with more to be revealed later this year.
“I am blessed to be sharing Tribal Mark with the world. Mark may be born in Nigeria, [and] grown in London, but the global reception proves this is an international story,” shared Skepta.
The film follows the journey of the titular character from a troubled child to a sharpshooter. The immigrant story centered in the film is highlighted by an emphasis on Nigerian food staples that make a constant appearance in Tribal Mark, keeping the Mark connected to his roots in uncertain times.
Additionally, Tribal Mark features a 90 percent minority ethnic cast and production team, a first of its kind in British cinema.
