Smoking! Hilary Duff and neighbor's feud escalates with cop calls and Disney fan 'threats'
Maybe Hilary Duff should consider a nice house in the ‘burbs for the remainder of her stay in NYC while shooting Younger.
The actress put an annoying neighbor on blast Wednesday, dragging the guy, whom she identified in her series of now-deleted posts, because his cigarette and pot smoke has allegedly been seeping into her place, where she resides with her young son, and the guy keeps her up all night. In her Instagram stories, she also claimed he was throwing around furniture, perhaps while fighting with a partner, while intoxicated. The public shaming was a bold move, but it seems it came after a giant blowup between Duff’s boyfriend, Matthew Koma, and the neighbor, Dieter Addison, which involved the police.
According to the New York Post, police were called to the building they all share on Wednesday at 11:30 a.m., prior to Duff’s online rant. Addison claims he made the 911 call after Koma “barged in” to his apartment “and tried to punch me in the face. … I tried to avoid his fist, but he hit me on the head. So I pushed him out of the apartment, but I didn’t assault him.”
Though a rep for Koma called the allegations “untrue,” Addison said that, at the advice of his attorney, he filed a full police report at his local precinct after NYPD officers at the scene took his statement. He’s now considering a restraining order against her because he’s getting “a lot of hate mail and threats” from the former Disney Channel star’s fans, and he’s terrified. “It is so bad I’m going to have to get a bodyguard,” he added.
Duff deleted her posts but issued a statement to the newspaper via her rep, saying, “Hilary and her young son have been subjected to excessive secondhand smoke, late-night noise, garbage in the hallways, and an overall hazardous living environment from this man for months now. She tried numerous times in polite ways to handle this situation including countless sessions with the landlords of the building. As every mother knows, protecting your kid has to come first and foremost and that is her primary goal. She reached a breaking point after a 15-hour workday and yet another sleepless night.”
Here are some of Duff’s Instagram posts:
In his interview with the Post, Addison addressed some other claims Duff made about him, whom she described as an “a**hole,” including that he “smokes cigarettes and weed all night long” and that he has “never worked a day,” with his parents paying his rent.
“I live with a sober companion; I’ve been sober for months now,” he said. “I smoke a ton of cigarettes, don’t get me wrong — but this is a smoking building, which is why I signed the lease here.” (The sober companion is Topes Calland, who has been described as a “$1,000 per hour super-mentor who rescues the children of the rich and famous.”) As for his work situation, Addison said he works at his family’s real estate office and is also an event producer who manages music artists.
And Addison claims he has tried to work with Duff to resolve this issue. “When they moved in” in January, “I turned down the music right away,” he said, not detailing any further why he was asked to quiet down in the first place. “When [Duff] first complained about smoke, I did offer to send in my own contractors to fix the ventilation problems. But the building owners did not get back to me to give the OK for the work to be done, but I did try.”
With the talk of a bodyguard and restraining order, it seems like this situation won’t soon be resolved. But let’s hope it has better results than what Justin Theroux has been going through with his neighbor … for at least the past three years.
