SNL Music Video: Kate McKinnon, Billie Eilish and Friends Run a Tampon Farm

If you took the Dixie Chicks, ground them up, and made a concentrated elixir, you would get “Tampon Farm” – two-and-a-half minutes of perfect feminist country folk rock that gets all of Saturday Night Live‘s female cast — and a slew of very special guests– in on the fun.

The video opens with SNL alum/guest host Kate McKinnon playing an acoustic guitar and singing about a strong Midwestern farmer woman sitting on a tractor (special guest Maya Rudolph, who also appeared during the monologue and another previous sketch). Then she sings about Kristen Wiig, also guesting this week, who wears burlap and has sweat on her brow. The wind blows through McKinnon’s hair through all of this and it’s virtually indistinguishable from any good country song about hardworking, salt of the earth people tilling the soil.

Then it’s revealed that what they grow is… tampons… harvested off stalks like corn. The song doesn’t break its stride – it remains about hope and wisdom and the toughness of farmer folk. They just happen to farm a deeply silly crop.

There’s shots of them sorting the tampons into Light, Regular and Super baskets. Their sun-drenched skin glows as they pull them out of the soil and shake them from trees – all while playing guitars. Even musical guest Billie Eilish gets in on the fun, showing off her bumper crop

It’s a doomed enterprise – utopias of women, apparently, aren’t a good business model and they spend all their time singing instead of farming. But their loss is our gain. You’re not going to have three of the best singers in SNL history on the show and not have them sing about their menses, are you?

Watch the “Tampon Farm” sketch above, then weigh in on this week’s episode hosted by McKinnon and featuring musical guest Eilish.
