Snowpiercer: Jennifer Connelly Teases Melanie’s Confrontation With [Spoiler] — and a ‘Hopeful’ Series Finale

Snowpiercer opened its fourth and final season with an episode that both began and ended in fittingly chilling fashion.

Following a cold open that saw Till and Ben run up against some most unexpected adversaries whilst doing recon for Snowpiercer, the bulk of the season opener was set nine months later, where Layton, Josie, Ruth, Zarah and the others who chose “Team Big Alice” were enjoying a comparatively idyllic existence in “New Eden,” located in the Horn of Africa.
That sunny-ish life turned dark, though, when it became apparent that someone (or someones) do not wish the outpost to make contact with Snowpiercer, as Zarah met a grisly fate, when a near-frozen Miss Audrey arrived in New Eden on a track scaler, and, in the penultimate sequence, when Layton discovered that newborn daughter Liana had been kidnapped.
The action then “rewound” nine months, with Snowpiercer being boarded by the three snow-suited individuals Till and Ben had seen and apparently been taken prisoner by. Their leader, Admiral Milius of the International Peacekeeping Forces, promised the passengers no harm — provided that he is led straight away to Melanie Cavill.
But how amendable will Melanie be to accommodating this stranger who just forced his way onto her train?
“Well, I think she’s OK to take the meeting,” Snowpiercer star Jennifer Connelly told TVLIne during a Monday morning Zoom, but Milius and his cohorts have definitely “introduced a new wrinkle, and new obstacles, for our protagonists to have to overcome” in the episodes ahead, she noted.
Snowpiercer Season 4 was filmed some two years ago, under new showrunner Paul Zbyszewski (Agents of SHIELD, Helstrom), then waited a long time for someone to offer a home for the dystopian drama abandoned by TNT.
“It’s always fun to have a new perspective, and energy, and enthusiasm,” she said of Zbyszewski’s contributions. “He had a lot of passion for the show.”
Connelly similar sang the praises of Season 4 cast additions Clark Gregg (Agents of SHIELD), who’s playing Admiral Milius, and Michael Aranoff (The Americans), who debuts in Episode 2 (airing July 28) as Dr. Nima Rousseau.
But when all is said and done, where will Snowpiercer the series be heading, with its very final episode?
Teasing the season/ersatz series finale (airing airing Sept. 22), Connelly told TVLine, “I really like the ending of it.
“I think it was really positive for ‘our team,'” she added with a chuckle. “It ends on a note of unity and community, with a hopeful note that I really enjoyed.”
