Change can be scary for anyone and in Season 3 of Somebody Somewhere, Sam’s about to face it head on whether she likes it or not.

In Sunday’s premiere, Sam’s world is turned upside down. Her sister Tricia is getting a divorce, Joel is prepping to move in with his boyfriend Brad, and Sam is even considering getting a dog. Even though the drama from Season 2 is well behind her and she’s accepting life’s twists and turns at face value, it’s still a lot to manage for a woman who doesn’t quite know where she fits into this world.

“This season, for everybody, but especially Sam, it’s like one step forward, two steps back,” co-creator, writer and executive producer Paul Thureen tells TVLine. “We love this idea of this new world where her friends are all coupled up. And Sam, who’s been somebody who had such anger towards the idea of relationships, she’s at a place where the idea of her friends being in relationships isn’t a threat, but she still has to find her place in the world. Joel’s journey of figuring out who he is within a relationship sort of mirrors Sam’s journey of figuring out who she is outside of her friends’ relationships. So I think that was our starting point, to see [that] Sam’s grown so much. But how is she going to deal with being unmoored and lonely?”

What may seem like baby-steps to most are giant leaps for Sam, such as her decision to adopt a dog. (Someone else beats her to the punch for the puppy she wants and it crushes her.) But as Thureen mentions, Sam takes Joel’s big news very well and at the top of Season 3, she’s way more supportive of his life changes than in the past.

“You would think that Sam could get really angry and upset seeing Joel and Brad moving in together, but instead it gives her this space to reflect on herself,” says co-creator, writer and executive producer Hannah Bos. “Of course, [that’s] catalyzed by Joel being in her life from Seasons 1 and 2, but it’s nice to spend some time with her. She keeps growing and in a show that’s a coming-of-age story about a woman in her 40s, it’s fun to show that. You can keep growing. You could keep changing. Life’s not over.”

Adds Sam’s portrayer, Bridget Everett: “I think that she’s kind of taken notice of… not ‘let go and let God,’ but if you get out of your own way, life can be a whole lot bigger than she’s experiencing. And I think she wants to feel things more deeply. I think she wants to stop being so afraid. She sees how other people love and accept themselves and she wants that for herself. It just takes her a whole lot longer to get there.”
