Somebody Somewhere’s Mary Catherine Garrison on Aftermath of Tricia’s Unfortunate Fling: ‘Like We Haven’t All Been There!’
Tricia Miller may be a brand new woman post-divorce, but that doesn’t mean she’s immune from some unfortunate setbacks. In Sunday’s Somebody Somewhere, she felt the burn of one serious misstep in her newly reformed life. Or rather, a very literal burning sensation. Down there.
While out of town on a business trip with Sam, Tricia revealed a major secret: She had recently slept with her ex-husband Rick. “I did not mean to and I did not want to!” she yelled in a panic. “We f—king got drunk and now I have a goddamn disease!” (Chlamydia, in fact.)

Not only did Tricia force Sam to look at her vagina (“That’s not a UTI!”), but we couldn’t help but giggle along with Sam during Tricia’s shower meltdown or when she went on an expletive-filled rant cursing Rick’s name.
“Oh, like we haven’t all been there, come on!” Mary Catherine Garrison tells TVLine. “Have you never had a hookup with an ex? It’s one of those things where I’m sure pinot grigio was involved, and a little bit of couch-time loneliness. Rick shows up at the right time. There’s a little familiarity there, some comfort and a bit of bad judgment sprinkled in. But I do think it’s utterly human and probably like 98% of the population can relate to it.
“Shooting that scene was so funny,” she continues. “Jay Duplass directed that episode and I thought I knew how that scene should go and I got there that day and what I was doing wasn’t working. And then he sort of figured out that a lot of it is about the anger towards [Rick] and that’s when everything came together.”
Despite her medical bump in the road, Season 3 Tricia feels like a whole new person, which allows for a much more developed dynamic between the sisters.
“It’s amazing to see how much their relationship has changed,” says co-creator, writer and executive producer Hannah Bos. “When you think about the pilot, the conversation in the basement of the house, I’m thinking about Trisha’s attitude towards her whole life in that moment. And then you cut to this season and Tricia has learned and grown a lot.
“Mary Catherine is so amazing this season,” Bos adds. “I just love where Tricia’s at. I love her living her best life. I love seeing her getting in and out of that Escalade. I love her dating life. I love that her job is doing well. I love her c–t pillows. She’s trying so hard. She’s trying to manifest it, but still, there’s a struggle. It’s funny because at times I think that Sam has her s–t together more. There’s all these fun parallels between the sisters this season where they are on the same page, and then when they’re not, it’s also very fun.”
Tricia’s many life changes and go-getter attitude has given Garrison some amazing material to sink her teeth into, all of which has allowed the character to blossom, STDs be damned.
“She is feeling herself and she is this powerful businesswoman,” Garrison says. “She’s starting to check off boxes. She got the Escalade she’s always wanted and she’s just in a new phase of feeling her own power. Then here comes Episode 4, [like] smashing into a brick wall, and it’s very humbling and humiliating. Life can come at you fast sometimes. I don’t think she’s as deep as Sam. I think she’s a little more of a shallower person, which is maybe why some things are easier for her. But I do feel like Sam teaches her to lighten up in a way that she was in dire need of.”
