‘Soul Food’ Cast Reunites After 27 Years On ‘GMA3’

Soul Food debuted in 1997, and 27 years later, Vanessa Williams, Vivica A. Fox, Mekhi Phifer, and Michael Beach reunited to reflect on their time since the film (streaming here).

Visiting GMA3 in celebration of Black History Month, the talented cast revealed that, although there have been separate instances where they have shared workspace, they have not all been together in the same room since the 1990s press run.

“We ate soul food for like two weeks,” shared Fox of their time promoting the now classic movie. “Everywhere that we went, guess what we were eating. Soul food.”

As the conversation continued, Williams revealed her dress to be familiar to the Soul Food set, as it belonged to her character, Teri.

“And it still fits and everything,” exclaimed Beach, who portrayed her less-than-faithful husband in the film. “Vanessa keeps it together, I’ll tell you that,” added Phifer.

The actors continued to reflect on their characters and the legacies they each created on screen.

I think young men, young women, that come from a certain place and certain environment, its always an uphill battle and I think that Lem was going through an uphill battle…I think that’s an ongoing experience for people,” shared Phifer of his role.

“He didn’t want to be a criminal, or anything like that. He wanted to have a wife and a family. He wanted to be part of something.”

Beach continued to elaborate on how his fictional character’s infidelity has followed him throughout his career.

“It’s a hard thing to get away from,” explained the 60-year-old as the collective laughed. “I did it to Angela Bassett in another movie [Waiting to Exhale], then I did it to Vanessa…I still hear it today.”

Soul Food is now streaming on Hulu as part of Hulu’s “Black Stories Always” campaign. Take a glimpse at a trailer for the film below and watch the cast reunite on GMA3 above.
