Spelling Bee Champ Asked to Spell Covfefe
Friday morning on CNN, Alisyn Camerota and Chris Cuomo welcomed Scripps National Spelling Bee champ Ananya Vinay, and naturally, they asked her to spell something. But it wasn’t exactly a word they asked her to spell — not a real one, anyway. They asked Vinay to spell “covfefe”, the fake word President Trump introduced to the world in a tweet Tuesday night.
Vinay smiled and asked all the questions you’d expect from a spelling bee champ, starting with the definition of the word.
“A nonsense word made up by the 45th president of the United States in a late-night tweet,” Camerota replied.
The nonexistent definition for the fake word wasn’t enough for Vinay, so she pressed on, asking for the word’s language of origin and part of speech. The language of origin was easy: gibberish. But the part of speech question caused a slight disagreement between the anchors. Camerota said covfefe is a noun, but Cuomo had other ideas.
“It could be a noun, but it may be used as a verb and as an insult,” Cuomo said.
The moment of truth came, and Vinay gave it a shot.
“Covfefe. C-O-F-E-F-E,” Vinay said.
She left out the “v” — but it’s not a real word anyway, so no harm done.
