Spike Lee hit the red carpet at tonight's 91st annual Academy Awards wearing a custom pair of metallic gold pair of Jordan 3s. The shoes, it turns out, were a gift from none other than His Airness himself. "Shout out to my main man Michael Jordan, who commissioned Tinker Hatfield to design these gold Oscar Jordans!" Lee announced on his Instagram yesterday.

The shoes are true one-of-ones, too. First off, they're not your standard AJ 3s. Instead, they're the more recent Jordan 3 Tinker model, which takes the Air Jordan 3 design we're all familiar with and adds a Nike swoosh as an homage to the initial design cooked up by Hatfield-the man behind the 3, as well as a lot of your other favorite Jordans. Then there are the details: The left heel is emblazoned with the Jumpman logo, while the right features branding for Lee's own 40 Acres and a Mule production company.

The heel and toe get the elephant-skin treatment reminiscent of the famous White Cement and Black Cement models, and then, of course, there's the color. Gold. Oscar gold, if we're being precise. These things announce themselves in no uncertain terms; when it comes to fashion choices for the movie industry's biggest red-carpet event, that's kind of the point.

Spike didn't stop at the shoes, though. He also rocked a very, very purple suit, plus the "Love" and "Hate" rings made famous in his 1989 classic Do the Right Thing.

The rings are a no-brainer from the director, but in case you're wondering about that purple suit, Spike's necklace-and Instagram-offer a little more clarity. Apparently they're both a tribute to the Purple One, Prince.

Lee's look isn't subtle, and it's not something every guy-or, really, any other guy-could pull off on the red carpet. But for him, it's perfect.
