What is My Spy: The Eternal City about?

“The eagerly awaited follow-up to 2020’s action comedy, My Spy The Eternal City reunites a beloved cast led by Dave Bautista and Chloe Coleman in a feel-good family adventure set in some of Europe’s most storied destinations,” the official synopsis reads. When Sophie’s (Coleman) high school choir is selected for an Italian tour culminating in a performance for the Pope in Vatican City, JJ (Bautista) sees this as an opportunity to bond with his new stepdaughter, so he volunteers to help chaperone the group through the Venetian canals, across Florence’s renowned bridges and into Rome’s most historic sites. Instead he finds that he and Sophie have become unwitting pawns in a terrorist plot that could end the world as we know it.”

Along with Bautista and Coleman, the sequel stars Kristen Schaal, Flula Borg, Craig Robinson, Billy Barratt, Taeho K, Anna Faris, and Ken Jeong.

My Spy: The Eternal City is directed by Peter Segal, who directed the first film in the franchise as well as 1995’s Tommy Boy, 2004’s 50 First Dates, and 2008’s Get Smart, among other titles. Segal co-wrote the screenplay with Erich Hoeber and Jon Hoeber. He also produces the movie alongside Bautista, Chris Bender, Jake Weiner, Robert Simonds, Gigi Pritzker, and Jonathan Meisner.

While it was originally intended to be released in United States theaters in April 2020, My Spy was delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Amazon Studios bought the rights to the movie in April 2020. It was released in limited locations and drive-in theaters, as well as on streaming, in June 2020.

My Spy: The Eternal City begins streaming globally on Prime Video on July 18, 2024.
