“Squid Game” is finally back.
The megahit survival thriller series, Netflix’s most-watched show of all time, returns for Season 2 in December. On Thursday, the streaming service dropped an intense trailer for the new season. Seong Gi-hun, aka Player 456 (Lee Jung-jae), used to smile sometimes. He’s not smiling anymore.

The trailer gives us our best look yet at the long-awaited second season of the South Korean sensation. Gi-hun is back in the game, and trying to lead his follow players in a rebellion against the game-runners. He knows they’re all doomed, and he doesn’t want the fate that befell his friends in Season 1 to befall them, too. But A) people will do anything for money, and B) the people behind the game are ruthless, so things are going to get bloody. If you watched Season 1, you have a good idea about what’s going to happen to someone who reacts to getting stung by a bee during Red Light/Green Light.
Here’s the official synopsis from Netflix: “Three years after winning Squid Game, Player 456 gave up going to the states and comes back with a new resolution in his mind. Gi-hun once again dives into the mysterious survival game, starting another life-or-death game with new participants gathered to win the prize of 45.6 billion won.”
Season 2, like Season 1, is written and directed by creator Hwang Dong-hyuk. In addition to Lee, the returning cast includes Lee Byung-hun as the mysterious Front Man and Wi Ha-jun as Detective Hwang Jun-ho, the Front Man’s brother.
“Squid Game” Season 1 is Netflix’s most popular title, with over 265 million views in its first month of release starting in September 2021. Season 2 may be even bigger. “Squid Game” made Emmys history, with the first-ever wins for a non-English language series. It was nominated for 14 Emmys, including Outstanding Drama Series, and won six, including Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for Lee. It spawned a franchise, including the reality competition series “Squid Game: The Challenge,” as well as a video game and a touring activation. An English-language adaptation from David Fincher is reportedly in the works. A third and final season will premiere in 2025.
“Squid Game” Season 2 premieres Dec. 26 on Netflix.
