Squid Game: The Latest on David Fincher’s Rumored English-Language Spinoff
It’s looking more and more like we may have our first scripted spinoff of Netflix’s incredibly popular (but lonnnnnnng-MIA) Squid Game series.
As far back as April 2023, Jeff Sneider aka TheInsneider shared rumblings that filmmaker David Fincher was being eyed to direct an American version of Squid Game, the South Korean thriller that stands as Netflix’s most popular series of all time.

But in June of this year, The Playlist — in the course of sharing an update on Fincher’s Chinatown prequel — reported that “Fincher has been quietly working on [an English-language] Squid Game for the last two years or so” (emphasis ours) “and even has a writer working on it: British writer Dennis Kelly,” of the Channel 4 thriller Utopia.
Now, our sister site Deadline is reporting that the English-language Squid Game spinoff — supposedly titled Squid Game: America — “is likely the project Fincher commits his time to in 2025.”
Early speculation was that Squid Game: America would be a movie, or an Americanized remake of the original South Korean thriller, but now, DanielRPK among others are reporting it will be an English-language spinoff set in the same universe.
Netflix has not been commenting on the assorted reports.
Squid Game Season 2: Everything We Know
Squid Game: America would be one of several projects Fincher has in queue at Netflix, following the November 2023 release of his Michael Fassbender-led thriller The Killer.
Netflix recently announced that Squid Game Season 2 will debut on December 26, with a third and final season coming in 2025. Additionally, on the unscripted front, the reality competition series Squid Game: The Challenge — which finaled last December — is in production on Season 2.
