‘Squid Game,’ Netflix’s most popular show ever, debuts teaser in advance of December release
Wake up, it’s time to watch people get shot on candy-colored stages yet again.
Netflix’s most-watched series in its history, “Squid Game,” released the teaser to its second season at its “Geeked Week” pep rally in Atlanta on Thursday. The South Korean action-satire (at least we think it’s a satire) centers on a tournament in which economically struggling people compete for a cash prize in a series of elaborate and sunnily-designed children’s games … which then turn out to be deadly. Lee Jung-jae’s main character survived the first season, but finds himself back in his jumpsuit, having vowed revenge against “The Front Man” (played by Lee Byung-hun), the despicable mastermind. The second season will debut on December 26 of this year.

“Squid Game” Season 1 launched in 2021. Its creator Hwang Dong-hyuk said that the total story will last three seasons—and we won’t have to wait quite so long for the next installment. (It is anticipated to stream sometime next year.)
While notably gruesome in its body count, and accused by some critics of having an anti-violence message while also reveling in gore, “Squid Game” became a viral sensation all over the world in 2021. In the United States, Netflix said over 3 billion minutes of it were streamed in a single week, making a new record. Its first season was nominated for eight Primetime Emmys, winning three of them, including Best Drama Directing and Best Drama Actor (for Lee Jung-jae) and a nomination for Best Drama Series. It was the first non-English series to be nominated (losing to “Succession,”) clearing the runway a bit for “Shogun” and its recent win. The series also won four Creative Arts Emmys.
