Season one of “Squid Game” was a worldwide phenomenon when it premiered on Netflix in 2021. It also became a groundbreaking hit at the Emmys, earning 14 nominations including Best Drama Series and winning six prizes: Best Drama Actor for Lee Jung-jae, Best Drama Guest Actress for Lee You-mi, Best Drama Directing for series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk, and below-the-line awards for production design, stunt performance, and visual effects. Those were revolutionary victories for a series entirely in a language besides English.
But that’s not all. Lee, Jung Ho-yeon, and the show’s stunt ensemble won SAG Awards. Lee also won Critics Choice and Independent Spirit Awards, Oh Yeong-su claimed a Golden Globe, and the show claimed a Gotham Award for Breakthrough Series (Longform). So expectations are especially high for the return of the show to live up to the pop cultural impact it had three years ago. Either way, it’s almost time to play.
