New ‘Squid Game’ Season 2 Trailer Just Dropped—It’s Intense!
In 2021, the Korean thriller Squid Game took the world by storm. The phenomenon that was this series led to Halloween costumes emulating the show’s main characters, social media trends trying to accomplish the challenges depicted in the episodes and an overall worldwide obsession with the gripping-yet-gruesome nine-episode series. Luckily for fans of the show, a second season is on the way, with the trailer finally dropping, giving us a glimpse into what we can expect. Read on to find out all about the new season.
What happened in ‘Squid Game’ season 1?
The first season of this wildly popular series tells the story of a group of people who receive an invitation to participate in a series of children’s games for a large amount of money. Taken to an unknown location, the main character wakes to discover that he is competing against hundreds of other contestants, all in dire financial situations, in a series of children’s games that if lost, have a fatal consequence. As the games progress, the stakes get higher and higher—and so do their potential earnings. The character at the forefront of the series comes out on the other side, but what’s in store for him in the second season is hard to say just yet.
‘Squid Game’ season 2 trailer
The second season of this show, which will make its debut on December 26, takes place three years after the games that occurred in season 1. The man that season 1 centered around, Gi-hun, played by Lee Jung-jae, returns in season 2, re-entering the games in the hopes of putting an end to their deadly ways once and for all.
“His always-optimistic disposition has been replaced with a hardened demeanor following the horrors of the previous games,” said Netflix’s Tudum. “Despite the lasting emotional scars, Gi-hun is on a desperate mission to expose the deadly truth of the competition. But will his fellow players heed his warnings—or blaze their own dangerous path?”
In the trailer for the second season, we’re brought right back into the deadly games of the first season, including the high-stakes red-light-green-light that still makes us squirm—and it doesn’t come as a surprise that the showrunners are bringing back the plot points that drew viewers in the first time. For its first season, Squid Game was nominated for a total of 14 Emmy Awards, taking home six for Outstanding Directing, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for Lee Jung-jae, Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series for Lee You-mi and more.
As for what’s in store for the next installment, Lee Jung-jae told British GQ: “What I can tell you is that season 2 has a deeper context in the way that it looks [at] human behavior. There's also more variety to the characters and when I was reading the script, I thought it was even more exciting than season one.”
Catch up on season 1 on Netflix, and don’t miss the new season, out December 26.
