‘St. Elmo’s Fire’ Sequel in ‘Very Early Stages’ of Development, Says Rob Lowe: ‘We’ve Met With the Studio’
A feature film sequel to the seminal 1985 Brat Pack movie “St. Elmo’s Fire” is in early development, Rob Lowe confirmed in a recent interview. Lowe and his son, John Owen Lowe, talked to “Entertainment Tonight” about their Netflix comedy series “Unstable,” and the actor spoke about the possibility of rebooting “St. Elmo’s Fire” as a Sony film.
“We’ve met with the studio and I have been talking about doing it for about four months,” Lowe said about a potential sequel. He said the release of the “Brats” documentary earlier this summer from fellow Brat Packer Andrew McCarthy has “only added to the excitement around it.”

“But it’s very, very, very, very, very early stages,” he said. “So we will see.”
The original “St. Elmo’s Fire” followed seven recent college graduates navigating their new adult lives, and co-starred Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, McCarthy, Emilio Estevez and Ally Sheedy. The late Joel Schumacher was director, and he co-wrote the script with Carl Kurlander.
Rob Lowe, Moore, Estevez and Sheedy all went on camera for McCarthy’s recent documentary, in which McCarthy talks to his fellow actors about the origins of the term “Brat Pack” in a New York magazine story and the effect it’s had — or hasn’t had — on their careers.
A “St. Elmo’s Fire” TV series was shopped in 2019, with Josh Berman attached to write and executive produce and Chris King also executive producing, but it didn’t get off the ground.
John Owen Lowe, who stars as eccentric tech mogul Rob Lowe’s son in “Unstable,” admitted to “E.T.” he had not seen his father’s classic film. The second season of “Unstable” premieres Aug. 1 on Netflix.
